Why Learn?
1. Because it's HUGE FUN !
Put on a music CD and just try keeping a young child still ! They'll want to get up, move around and dance, maybe laugh a bit, perhaps jump with surprise at a loud note ... All humans are musical and we all naturally respond to musical sound. My pupils laugh, ask questions, explore, overcome challenges, achieve goals, and above all else - have FUN !
2. Because it helps your education !
It's official - learning music is like a fitness routine for the brain ! All the research into the effects of learning an instrument on the academic performance of children shows that it is a huge help. There are many ideas as to why this is, but it is true that music helps to develop confidence, communication, concentration, co-ordination, number skills, literary skills, social skills and fine motor skills.
3. Because it makes your life richer !
Music can inspire, calm, soothe, enliven, reassure, echo, de-stress and direct the human brain. It gives it a direct boost of emotional nutrients ! Music speaks the equivalent of a thousand words in one phrase.
Quite apart from that, music is often the way into a great social life. If you can play an instrument, you can join a group and meet a whole bunch of interesting people you didn't know before. Only been playing a short time ? There are plenty of groups specially aimed at children. Moving on to a new school ? Great, you can join the orchestra and make new friends fast. Moving to an independent school ? Maybe they have Music Scholarships you could apply for, but in any case, all schools know that musicians tend to do well in class, and so they are always interested in children who can play. Off to College or University ? Many universities have an orchestra, and some have more than one. You don't usually have to be studying music to take part. Starting a new job ? What could be a better way to unwind after a stressful day, than making music in the evening with an amateur orchestra ? Retiring ? A great chance to devote more time to music, perhaps by attending a local music course, or a residential one !
Becoming a musician will enrich your life.
